How much dessicant is needed in an alternative dry box?
How much dessicant should I use if I want to use a clear plastic box as a temporary dry box? I can fit around 3 vintage cameras (circa 1960s-1970s) with cushioning foam per box, and would need to protect them while I'm still saving up for a proper dry box. Thanks!
Amount of desiccant depends on the size of box, humidity and the dead air inside the box. These things are difficult to calculate without any instruments in an alternate dry box.
Best option is to use 'self indicating silica gel'. Such a desiccant will provide you information about the quantity being enough or not by the color.
Silica gel, which I prefer usually adsorbs 25% wt/vol water and is quite effective. Even around 100 gm of it in a medium sized box helpds me keep six lens dry. The colour of the gel turns to Light Blue (from deep blue) after around one day showing that it's sufficient.
When it turns white/pink or transparent, I know that the gel is hydrated and I have to use new silica gel or reheat the one that's being used.
I don't recommend a proper dry box. Home alternative works equally well. Better use the money to buy some lens or other accessories for your camera.
