Old Stock
How do I cash in old stock certificates, find stock worth and number of shares currently held?
The stock is PPG. If you're calculating for me, please calculate based on 100 shares in 1982. I think the stock split at least once since then, but I am not certain. Thanks for your help!
You should take them to a stock broker. They may be able to help you best. The stock did split 3 times. 9/13/83, 5/13/87, and 6/13/93.
The 100 shares should now be 800 shares. You will need to know the original owner and find the record holder. You may go to PPG directly to try to get additional information on these particular shares. It is possible for the shares to have already been sold, so do not start spending the money yet.

Old Stock And Fair Price Shops
The government of Tamil Nadu has been very liberal to its people. The large population is provided ration and other necessities from Fair Price shops and government sponsored department stores which sell products at lower rates. The quality of these products is better left unquestioned. Also the government has this policy of sending in products a few months late after letting them rest in the government warehouses. Hence the latest products are never available at these "Fair Price Shops".
The instant cold drinks and beverages which have a booming sale in the summer are available only by the end of the season. And the next year the old stock is perched on the shelf asking us to take it home. The Indian consumer has a high standard of living. Nine out of ten people below the poverty line have enough money to spend on their basic needs. Then why is it that the people remain mum against this kind of a quality bias? We are ready to wait for lower prices even if the stock is getting old. Everything is not wine and this is something that we have to remember before me make any kind of a purchase. This is the case with daily moving goods. The government also has State sponsored dispensaries and medical shops. No wonder why they always stay empty with no line of customers.
Getting good products is a primary consumer issue, and to get them at reasonable prices is another. There is something known as a best before date on every product and no manufacturer is an imbecile to put it up on the packet unless it is to be adhered to. It is the time span till which the product is consumable or does not cause harm. This is not to be easily dispensed with as we consumers do. The company or manufacturer will hold no responsibility if the consumer does not check the date or knowingly consumes a product which is well past its best before date. Do not even try going to court thinking you can win such a case. It is sheer madness. The best thing to do is nip it in the bud. Never allow such a problem to rise by giving a simple glance at the BEST BEFORE or EXPIRY DATE of the product. How many of us do that? Not many and those who do it might have been victims of some kind of a mishap that occurs when one does not check the date. The consumer is always right, as long as he uses his discretion to choose the product. No shopkeeper will stop you from buying an old product save a few gentlemen. All that is required in a business is to sell a product and earn a profit on it. We should make sure we do not suffer a loss just because we didn't look at the packet carefully.
Rice, the staple food of our country is sold for one rupee per kg in Fair Price Shops, Fair Price for the government I should say because there is nothing fair in the quality of rice that is provided. This quality of rice should be given off for free. Even a rupee per kg for this rice is an outrageous price. Stones in pulses, chalk powder in Talc are some of the common things that are presented to consumers in flashy fancy packaging. Adulteration of food products is present in every economy in every country around the world. Earning profit is something which keeps everything moving and for this there are certain things to be done.
Coming back to the government Fair Price Shops, there aren't very many methods by which the government can provide stuff at subsidized rates. One of them is to store the product. The prices rise all the time and at that time the older packets have the older rate which is kind of subsidized. But we have to ensure the products we buy are not discounted on durability and quality. So look out for the Best Before or Use By or Expiry Date on the packet of everything you buy and consume.
