Whitby Jet jewellery turned brown. Why?
I have a genuine Whitby Jet antique brooch, with a bird and a rose and a rope edging. Beautiful. However, I have had it stored away for about two years, and it appears to have lost it's blackness - looks rather dull and brown. Can anyone tell me why?
I remember this happening to a Jet locket that my mother had years ago.
Is it likely to return to its black shiny condition, say on exposure to the light once again?
Thanking you in anticipation, oh yes, and does anyone know the significance of the bird and rose - presumably mourning symbols?
There is a Whitby jet shop in Whitby - you could ring them for advice. The shop is actually called "Whitby Jet".
