Pacific NW. Newt in yard. Shiny black with a muted gold design running down back? Kind?
My husband found a small newt in our yard and he wants to know if is toxic. It is a very shiny black with an attractive shade of gold in sort of a filigree pattern running down his back and tail. Couldn't find any pictures of it on the net. Any ideas as to what kind he might be?
Newts live in the water not on land (actually a newt spends the first few years of its life in water then comes on land for a few years, when it is in its terrestrial stage it is called an eft, then towards the end of its life it returns to the water and is called a newt again) all of that was just to say that it is probably a salamander not a newt.
It is probably a western long-toed salamander
