How do you go about getting a gemstone set into a necklace???
I have a friend who gave me a gemstone that I love and want to get it made into a necklace. But where do you get the necklaces to fit it or without anything in it already? I have never seen a necklace you can buy with a place for your own gemstone. So any help will be appreciated. I thought about just calling a jewler but wasnt sure. Thought Id try here first, thanks!!
First get the stone valued (approximately - if it is a friend and you like the stone anyway - then the actual value is unimportant!) - not for mercenary reasons, but to establish how much you should spend on the necklace to do it justice. If you spend a fortune on the necklace and the stone is not of the highest quality, the necklace will not look satisfactory. Also if the stone is very good, a cheap setting will not do it justice.
While you CAN make jewelery yourself, and buy the fittings yourself - it will may a few years to gain all the appropriate skills to make quality jewelery. You can take classes (even 'adult ed' night classes). It's a good and slightly profitable hobby
If you just want a necklace, then find a 'manufacturing jeweler'. These people MAKE jewelery: 'jewelery shops' will usually contract out this work (some do make things as well), and take a markup.
Look up in a Yellow pages for your area.
